7 reasons why people should debate

1) It lets you voice out your ideas and opinions.

* You get the chance to express your point of view, of what you think or how you feel about particular matters.

2) It builds up self-confidence.

* Unless you already have one. First things first, one cannot debate if one does not have the guts to speak in front of people deliberately defending your stand on the issue. Confidence is needed in a debate and will eventually be developed. Besides, if you don't have confidence in your own statements, how would you expect others to believe in that too?

3) It improves speaking skills & grammar.

* Through debating, your speaking skills and grammar will definitely get better. You will get to speak fluently and persuasively. Use of proper grammar will also be learned so as not to be mocked about by fellow debaters =)

4) It enables you to see different points of view, thus, helps you think outside the box.

* Definitely, you have to prove to the opposing team and to everybody that your stand is the believable one. But I don't imply narrow mindedness. You also have to see other people's point of view. That is the main purpose of debating, to see different sides so as to weigh things out. It helps you think broadly on different issues.

5) It helps you think critically & improves your reasoning skills.

* This must be one of the good skills one can get from debating. You can think fast and critically even when under pressure. Plus, you can be real good at reasoning. Your brain will surely be healthily exercised and will finally be put to use! (*kidding!)

6) It enhances teamwork within the group.

* Most of the time, we do not get to debate alone. We have teammates whom we share our stand with. Teamwork is essential because of the mere fact that you need to support each others idea to strengthen your side on the issue. Collaborating with teammates also enhances your interpersonal skills.

7) It creates awareness of current local, national, & international news.

* Since most of the topics on debate largely come from current happenings in our society, debaters needs to be updated on the current news. It is good to raise people's awareness especially the youth, who rarely views television for news but for hypes and gossips, admit it! ;)
